Bookshelf Styling

Are you struggling to style a corner in your home? Maybe it just needs to be styled differently or maybe it's missing one key decor piece?

Styling is one of my favorite elements of design. It brings a space together and makes a room feel complete. Today I’m sharing a few tips and tricks to help you style your bookshelves!

The first thing to keep in mind when styling your shelves is LAYERS!! Here are my favorite bookcase layers:

  1. Books

  2. A plant or type of greenery.

  3. Something natural. Either a wood bowl or a piece of driftwood.

  4. Picture frames

  5. A tray to collect small items.

  6. A collection of some sort.

  7. Something brass.

  8. Something abstract.

  9. Something glass.

Now that you have your accessories, how do you start?

  1. Start with your biggest items first (This is usually your picture frames), and place them in an every other order i.e.; one frame on the left side of the shelves, then one on the right side on the next shelf. You can also try skipping a shelf in between to give more interest.

  2. Find a spot on the shelf for your collection. Collections can be vases, hour glasses,

  3. Next group your accessories into like categories….glass, wood, small, big…..Then use the same every other rule to fill in like items.

  4. Fill in large holes with books, and use books to add layers.

  5. For more interest, layer objects in front of frames

We spent the afternoon doing Brooke’s office bookshelves. Instead of a tray we used a slice of Onyx to create interest. We also used a few of my other favorite pieces to style including baskets, a box, and beads for layering. We also had cute tiny helpers lending a hand.

Mix expensive items in with inexpensive items. Invest in a nice few pieces, but mix in vintage and Target items along with the expensive stuff.

Here are some of my favorite items:
